4 Important Habits For Over 50’s Who Want To Stay Active, And Keep Up With Their Grandchildren

Society might be telling you that you need to take it easy and slow down…

That you should accept feeling exhausted all the time and dealing with aches and pains…

That you should travel less, sit in front of your TV more, and give up on doing the things you love.

But this is NOT true.

Your age doesn’t define who you are, and what you can do.

And this blog shares 4 important habits for anyone who is over 50, and wants to be able to feel great, play their favorite sports, enjoy their hobbies, and keep up with their grandchildren!

Habit 1 – Move, And Be Active

The well-known saying is “If you don’t use it, you lose it”, and this is true for your health and fitness.

But this isn’t just about your ability to play sports or work out in the gym.

Even simple things like carrying groceries from the car, keeping your garden tidy, and

You might find that people try to do things for you, but actually, this is going to cause your more harm than good in the long term.

These little activities add up and help you maintain your strength, keep your heart healthy and make it easier to stay independent well into your retirement.

Keeping active throughout the day also helps to keep your joints moving freely, and avoids your muscles from feeling tight and tense.

So, try and move every hour if you can – Put down your book, pause your TV, and get up.

Even just a minute of movement can make a big difference and avoid that stiff, sluggish feeling when you eventually do get up to move on to your next activity.

If you struggle to exercise or keep active because of aches and pains, it’s so important to fix this now!

If you keep ignoring it, it’s going to keep getting worse, and over time, you end up weaker, less healthy, and as you age, you lose your independence and ability to take care of yourself.

A massive fear for people in their 50’s and beyond is that they can’t look after themselves, and become a huge burden to their children as they get older.

But you have the power to avoid this situation, and fixing your aches and pains so you can stay mobile, active and healthy is a crucial step.

Habit 2 – Eat and Drink Right

You’ve probably heard this all your life, but a healthy diet is an important factor in having energy beyond your 50’s, staying strong and in good shape, and feeling great.

Try to include plenty of fruit and vegetables, add in fermented foods which are packed with gut-friendly probiotics, and get your omega 3’s with salmon, chia seeds, flax seeds, and leafy green vegetables.

Remember to also drink enough water which helps your skin, detoxifies the body, and helps cut cravings. It can even reduce joint pain and stiffness.

Finally, be aware of your caffeine, and alcohol intake. You don’t need to avoid them entirely, but if you do drink coffee, drink wine/beer, or anything else that dehydrates you; you need more water to compensate for this.

For caffeine intake, try to stop 8 hours before you plan to go to bed, so your sleep doesn’t get disrupted.

Alcohol also can disrupt the quality of your sleep, and while it might help some drift off to sleep, it is proven to leave you with really low-quality sleep. As well as the calories, alcohol also has a negative impact on your immune systems, your energy levels, and you probably know the terrible feeling of a hangover.

Habit 3 – Sleep Well

Sleeping well, in both duration and quality, is another important habit to get into if you want to live life to the fullest after you hit 50!

A consistent sleeping pattern can make it easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

You can also aid your sleep by making sure the environment is right by trying to keep the bedroom cool and dark, having some screen-free time before you plan to sleep, and avoiding alcohol and caffeine as we have covered in the habit above.

If you struggle to get to sleep, there are plenty of natural remedies available like herbal teas and supplements that can help. You could also take a hot bath or shower before bed which relaxes your body, reduces stress levels, and the subsequent cooling down once you have got out helps your body recognize daytime has shifted to nighttime.

Finally, if you struggle to sleep because of common problems like back pain, shoulder pain, or neck pain, our expert team can help with this by giving you fast, natural pain relief, and getting allowing you to feel comfortable in your bed.

Habit 4 – Enjoy Your Life

The final habit is a very important one – because improving your health will mean you live longer but we want to make sure you are loving the life you live.

So look at your stress levels, and improve how you deal with stressful situations. Stress can make you sick, and have a massive impact on your mental health, so this shouldn’t be overlooked or simply accepted as a part of life that everyone has to deal with.

Also, look at your happiness, and try to plan plenty of activities that you love, with the people that you love.

If you love to travel and visit new places, then do that.

If you love going to pilates because it’s a fun way to keep fit, and gives you the chance to meet up with your friends, then do that.

If you like to be working on a project, retirement can be a difficult time as you have to adjust to a life without work. But if you enjoy working on something, then find your passion after your career has ended and make the most of the extra time you have.
